zilch
Fuck! Well, I was offered the job to the oil place on Friday. My cell had run out of batteries so I wasn't able to take it. I finallt got it around 8 p.m. on Friday. I am 99% sure that I am going to stay at the college. I am going to sit down tomorrow and chat with my boss about some issues that I have with working there.
The first being pay! I figure that I will be bringing home roughly $15,000 a year. That is insanely low with a family. My boss suggested last week that I would be moving up as soon as my job description changed by adding responsibilities. No offense to the other shmucks that make the same as me but I think that I already have a ton more responsibility than my fellow co-workers in the same job description as me. I am in charge of at least $100,000 in supplies. Not to mention I will be saving them thousands by not buying things that don't need to be bought.
I know it will take some time to get to know everything and all that but I would say within a year I would be able to start being the guy that does the purchasing or even talks with the representatives of supply companies and weed out the crap.
Right now they go to a local hardware store that is more expensive than using one of the catalogs in the office. This place is all fucked up! I will be in charge of "capturing" thousands of items and inputting them into a computer. All me! 15K is a fucking steal.
Next I would like to see that after my probationary period of 6 months I get a raise. Not a lot! Just enough to get by. I don't want to be an ass and not understand the beauty of the other benefits that I will be getting. I have been doing some research and have found that this school is in the Top 10 of public liberal arts school in the country! So, if I didn't do school here I would be a moron. I would probably take their English major and see what I could do with that. As I have found out while looking for jobs that all people want to see is if you have a 4 year degree.
Long term it will be the best thing for me. If all goes well my boss will think I am right and want to help me out...knowing that I am turning down a slightly better job to stay with them. I really do enjoy this job and the potential that it could grow into something great. Who knows I could stay there and get a raise here and there....get a degree and stay in this position if it so fits me to do so for way more money!
I will let you know how this all goes tomorrow night when I come home from work. I am also going to go and see what I have to do to take some summer classes. I can take 2 classes per semester and plan on taking 2 each semester. If I am able to do this, I would like to think that I would be able to get my degree in just over 5 years. Wish me luck!

CAck! That's awesome! I would use your job offer at the oil company as leverage in a NICE wayand only if you plan on following through. Saying what you said here - how you'll save the college money, you know the benefits are good but you, being the sole provider, have to feed, clothe and shelter your family so would they be willing...to up your pay by $5,000? Tell them what you plan to do for them - save them money from the catalogue, or whatever else you have planned. if necessary, let them know you'd hold off for the six months before the increase but it'd have to be in writing somewhere b/c you'll be passing up more money right now. Good luck!
